When it comes to royal connections, the historic town of Tewkesbury and the surrounding area is boasts plenty. Sudeley Castle, which is a short drive away located in the pretty village of Winchcombe, was the residence of Katherine Parr, the last surviving wife of King Henry VIII. The castle is surrounded by a breathtaking 1,200-acre estate and ten gardens. The centrepiece is the Queens' Garden, so named because four of England's queens - Anne Boleyn, Katherine Parr, Lady Jane Grey and Elizabeth I - once walked upon the original Tudor Parterre. Nowadays, the garden boasts over 70 varieties of roses.
Back at Tewkesbury; every July the town celebrates the Wars of the Roses Festival - a medieval festival commemorating the 1471 Battle of Tewkesbury, when the forces loyal to the House of Lancaster were comprehensively defeated by those of the rival House of York under their monarch, King Edward IV. From May onwards Tewkesbury takes on a notable difference when locals produce and display medieval banners outside their premises in readiness for the town's annual highlight - the Wars of the Roses Festival.
