1,260,000 men could be proposing this Valentine's day

1,260,000 men could be proposing this Valentine's day

If you have a feeling your partner is thinking about a marriage proposal, then you may be in luck this Valentine’s day!

A survey of over 2,000 UK adults conducted by jewellery retailer Diamond Heaven, has revealed what our true thoughts about a Valentine’s day proposal are and what could be right around the corner for some of us.

A fifth (21%) of people who are either married or currently engaged said they were proposed to on Valentines day, so this year could be lucky for those waiting on that special question.

Some parts of the UK are more likely to pop the question than others, as nearly one in ten (9%), of people in London and the West Midlands said they would like to propose to their significant other on Valentine’s day.

Of the male respondents to the survey, 5% stated they’d like to propose on the big day, meaning there is a potential of 1,260,000 men that might be getting down on one knee this year.

Out of all the age groups it was the 25 to 34 year olds who were hoping to get engaged on the day dedicated to romance, with one in ten (10%) agreeing to the statement.

Further to this 10% of women who answered said they’d like to be asked for their hand in marriage.

Although, if it doesn’t happen, then women could always wait two years as 2020 will be a leap year. The extra day added onto February is widely known as the day women can ask their partner to marry them.

When it comes to the UK’s thoughts on Valentine's day, the verdict was very much in the middle. Whilst 27% of people thought it was romantic and 11% thought it made the day memorable, there was 29% who thought popping the question on valentine's day was cliche and another 20% said it was unoriginal.

Nicholas Carter, Head of Retail & Development at Diamond Heaven says: “As a jewellery seller we always see a peak around Valentine’s day, but it’s interesting to see just how many people could potentially be proposing to their partner this year. Valentines is such a special and romantic day, we can see why it’s so popular.

“Following from the engagement of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, we’re predicting to see sales of three stone rings, like the one Harry created for Meghan, to be especially favoured this year!”
