New themed enclosure in Gloucestershire to house intake of African penguins

A new penguin enclosure has been unveiled at a wildlife park in the Cotswolds. Birdland Park & Gardens will celebrate the opening of the enclosure and the intake of several new residents as part of their Penguin Week during the May half-term (from May 28 until June 5th). Alistair Keen, head keeper at the nine-acre site in Bourton-on-the-Water, said: "Our penguins are often the star attraction to Birdland, so we're delighted to have increased their number." He continues, "They're all settling really well into our new themed enclosure, which has proved very popular with visitors in the short time it has been open." Alistair and his team have already welcomed a group of African penguins to the park from Bristol Zoo, with more due to arrive later in the year. African penguins are also called the Jackass Penguins due to their braying call. They're critically endangered in the wide due to pollution and overfishing. The enclosure's redevelopment work has seen the area completely transformed with a sleepy fishing village backdrop, by design company Dead Walk. The above and below water viewing areas of Penguin Shore have also been updated with new brand-new glass. Birdland already has some celebrity penguins in its ranks, including Spike, who has his own popular social media presence after appearing in an advert for biscuits and on TV with Sir David Attenborough.

There's a host of egg-citing events and activities taking place at Birdland throughout the Easter holidays, perfect for families and mini-mooners. In what is the season of new life, many of the birds will begin a courtship and dozens of eggs are due to be laid over the coming weeks. There have already been eggs with the Indian Scops owl and also nest box interest from the Spectacled owl, which are always the earliest of breeders. There have been early eggs from the Southern Ground Hornbill, Southern Lapwing, Crested Pigeon and Speckled Pigeon. Birdland's head keeper Alistair Keen said: "Easter is always a busy time of the year for us as we wait for the eggs to be laid. It's an exciting time of the year when we find out what our new residents are going to look like."

If you're planning a get together with your best girls or boys, the latest launch by award-winning vegan restaurant brand Stem & Glory is just the ticket. Great for adding an authentic flavour to your pre-wedding celebrations, the business has introduced the 'finish-at-home' vegan pizza. The launch is part of a rapid expansion of its online store serving restaurant-quality meals well beyond its home towns of Cambridgeshire and London to all over the UK. The pizzas have a Stem & Glory healthy twist including a lip-smacking menu of toppings made in-house entirely from vegetables and each one arrives ready for you to bake at home. Founder Louise Palmer-Masterton said, "We created our artisan pizza menu during the first lockdown, intending to launch at our new Cambridge site, but the latest lockdown has allowed us to develop it into a finish-at-home version. It has been so well received we will definitely be keeping it in our online store after we open again."
