My father has inspired my letter this issue. I know that I am very fortunate to have a wonderful dad with whom I have such a close bond. He has devoted his life to being our father, and my brother and myself wouldn’t be where we are today without his love, encouragement and support from our childhood years, through our teens into early adulthood and beyond. This included supporting us through both of our weddings and it’s this father-of-the-bride and-groom role (whether he’s your biological dad or stepfather) that’s often the subtle backbone to the day. Some offer financial support, others are there in the background ensuring that everything is running smoothly, calming your nerves as you prepare to walk down the aisle and entertaining loved ones with a humorous and heartfelt speech. It’s hard to know how to thank him, which is where my hand-picked selection of the season’s latest buys come in. Whatever your budget, there will be something to suit him.

Until the next issue...

The Painswick

Set in the idyllic Cotswold village of Painswick – known as the Queen of the Cotswolds – is this luxury boutique hotel, tucked away down a steep, windy road in a private spot with unrivalled views of the historic spire of St. Mary’s Church.

A bright neon sign greets you on arrival at the hotel that is an instagrammer’s delight, with arty and creative details to be photographed at every turn (follow them @the_painswick). It’s also ideal for couples who love the great outdoors, with cycling and walking being popular pursuits. There’s local farmer’s markets to be explored in nearby Cheltenham and Gloucester, The Rococo Garden for a stroll and a coffee, historic attractions including Tewkesbury Abbey and Berkeley Castle just a short drive away and the nearby towns of Moreton-in-Marsh and Woodstock to be discovered. Those wanting a more relaxing experience can enjoy the views of the surrounding countryside from the outdoor terrace at The Painswick or relax by the open fire in the two cosy lounges. The hotel often hosts fun events including Thirsty Thursdays with 50 per cent off wine and fizz and seasonal flower workshops – check out the What’s On section at www.thepainswick.co.uk

Being part of the Calcot Collection (the smaller, sister property to Barnsley House and Calcot) means there’s two treatment rooms by Calcot Spa, ideal for a spot of pre-wedding pampering. The treatment menu, using Elemis products, is endless with options also available for men. Wedding-worthy ones include the Superfood Pro-Radiance Facial and the Exotic Frangipani Body Nourish Wrap with manis and pedis by Leighton Denny.

Couples can say their vows in The Morley Horder lounge at this home-from-home property, with exclusive-use available.

Following post-ceremony al fresco drinks on the terrace, The Painswick Restaurant offers a great atmosphere for the wedding breakfast. Choices from the extensive menu, under head chef Jamie McCallum, include dishes made using fresh local produce with highlights including the rack of Cotswold lamb served with crisp belly, roast artichoke, ricotta and morels and beef Wellington served with dauphinoise potatoes and buttered greens. There’s also The Hearth with its wood-fired oven – a great spot for breakfast – and The Clutterbucks, an intimate room seating just 14 guests ideal for a private party if exclusive-use isn’t booked.

The 16 stylish rooms and suites range from small ones tucked away in the eaves of the building, medium-sized ones found in the garden wing boasting views over the Painswick Valley and larger ones located in the chapel wing with roll-top baths. The George’s Suite is a one-of-a-kind bridal suite positioned in the main house complete with a four-poster bed, separate sitting room, a roll-top bath and shower, log burner plus a balcony. The first breakfast together as newlyweds can be enjoyed on the Italianate terrace.
