Gloucestershire named the happiest place to visit when taking a staycation

For those looking to stay in the UK this half-term holiday and enjoy a staycation week away then head for Gloucestershire because researchers at Sunlife have found the best campervanning spots by analysing factors such as the number of campsites, fuel prices, vehicle offences, and even happiness levels for each location and Gloucestershire was voted third in the rankings. The Highlands in Scotland was voted in top place and Cornwall came second. This was closely followed by Dorset and then Devon.

Pick up a penguin experience with a summer visit to Birdland in Bourton-on-the-Water

Birdland Park and Gardens located in Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire will showcase more than 500 species of birds to thousands of visitors during the summer holidays. Located in the heart of the beautiful Cotswolds, the park's magical combination of wildlife, woodland, riverside and gardens makes it the perfect day out for couples enjoying a mini-moon in the region. A recent new development is the revamped penguin enclosure, with the atmospheric redesign transforming it into a sleepy fishing village. The above and below water viewing areas of Penguin Shore have also been updated with brand new glass, to give visitors a clearer view of some of the park's celebrity birds. They include Spike, who has his own popular social media presence after appearing in an advert for biscuits and on television with Sir David Attenborough, and Seth, the oldest male king penguin in Europe, Asia and Australia. Born in 1985, he starred in the blockbuster film Batman Returns, alongside the likes of Hollywood royalty such as Danny De Vito and Michelle Pfeiffer. The park's daily summer holiday programme includes flamingo, penguin and pelican feeds throughout the day. Visitors can head to the Encounter Zone, where they can meet giant tortoises, pet rabbits and guinea pigs, or come face to face with a snake. Venture into the Jurassic Journey and spot dozens of life-sized dinosaurs.

Luxury Cotswolds Rentals has welcomed four new properties to its portfolio ahead of the staycation season. The first, Crucis Park in Gloucestershire is a new country house available to rent for the first time for up to 20 guests, along with two newly converted barns for additional bedrooms, designed by Yiangou Architects. Set within its own estate, and just eight minutes from Cirencester, it's constructed from Cotswold ashlar stone and local rubble stone from the estate's quarry, drawing on the traditions of local architecture, within the broader context of Queen Anne styling. Internally, the house features marble and stone fireplaces, a central staircase, decorative plasterwork, mahogany bookcases and a painted timber-panelled dining room. It has eight bedrooms and bathrooms, a drawing room, dining room, library and a formal sitting room as well as a large heated swimming pool and tennis court. The house is fully staffed with a chef, butler and housekeeper and offers a dining menu made using locally sourced produce paired with fine wines alongside a well-stocked help-yourself whiskey bar for guests to enjoy.

Gloucestershire voted UK's sunniest staycation spot this July

With travel abroad still uncertain this month, accommodation for UK-based staycations is booking up fast. The team at Uswitch have rounded up the sunniest staycation spots in the UK where you can still book a holiday and Gloucestershire has been voted the UK's favourite for its bright weather this July, according to Met Office data. Gloucestershire was revealed to have the best weather during the summery month, with an average maximum temperature of 22 degrees and 45mm of rainfall in Ross-on-Wye. Another staycation spot also to book in July for the best weather was Devon.
